Upon closer inspection, the bookshelf is actually a secret entrance to the mystery mine. Note that completing his 'quest' is not actually required to enter the mine. Inside the mine is a puzzle that leads to a chest containing the Feathered Cap. If you already have the Feathered Cap, it'll give you a random amount of money. Description
Mike is an NPC located in his underground house in the north-eastern part of the dark forest (north of the grave of Xelf's sister) Mike's primary purpose is to provide you fish pies without having to head to Manheim. He can also hint you towards his Mystery Mine but he fails since if the adventure pay close attention, at the top of the bookshelf can be seen part of a doorway leading to the mine.

Mystery Mine
Mike is a crafter, and requests five apples and five beechwood. If you fufill his request he'll give you five fish pies, which you can in turn give to him in exchange for the knowledge that there's a secret regarding his bookshelf. Upon closer inspection, the bookshelf is actually a secret entrance to the mystery mine. Note that completing his 'quest' is not actually required to enter the mine.
